Description
Traumon is a medication whose active substance is etofenamate, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Applied topically, it is absorbed through the skin and accumulates in inflamed tissues. Topical application reduces the risk of systemic side effects typically associated with oral NSAIDs. Traumon gel does not leave a greasy residue on the skin.

Active Ingredient

  • Etofenamate

Excipients

  • Carbomer 940

  • Oleinocetyl polyethylene glycol ether

  • Sodium hydroxide

  • Isopropyl alcohol

  • Mactogol 400

  • Propylene glycol

  • Purified water

Dosage and Administration
Unless otherwise directed by a physician, apply a 5–10 cm strip of Traumon gel to the affected area, covering slightly more than the painful area. Gently massage until completely absorbed. Repeat 3–4 times daily.

  • For rheumatic complaints: treatment usually lasts 3–4 weeks.

  • For blunt injuries (e.g., sports injuries): treatment typically lasts up to 2 weeks.

Pharmacological Action
Etofenamate, the active ingredient in Traumon gel, is efficiently absorbed through the skin (~21%), which is substantially higher than ketoprofen (1%) or diclofenac (6%). The gel penetrates all skin layers, reaching inflamed or injured tissues. It inhibits prostanoid formation, reducing inflammation. Patients experience relief from pain and swelling and improved mobility in the affected joint.

Indications
Topical treatment of blunt injuries such as contusions, sprains, and strains of muscles, tendons, and joints. Also indicated for degenerative spinal, shoulder, and knee joint conditions and extra-articular rheumatism.

Contraindications
Do not use in case of hypersensitivity to any component, during pregnancy, or in children.

Adverse Reactions
Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders:

  • Uncommon (≥1/1,000 to <1/100): erythema, skin burning

  • Very rare (≤1/10,000): dermatitis including severe itching, rash, edema, vesicular rash

  • Frequency unknown: photosensitivity reactions

Immune system disorders:

  • Frequency unknown: hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis, respiratory hypersensitivity leading to asthma or bronchospasm, urticaria, angioedema, or rarely exfoliative and vesicular skin reactions (including epidermal necrolysis and erythema multiforme).

These adverse effects generally subside after discontinuation. Immediate medical attention is required if severe reactions occur.

Warnings and Precautions
Read the package leaflet for indications, contraindications, adverse effects, and dosage instructions. Consult a physician or pharmacist before use. Avoid applying on mucous membranes.

Interactions with Other Medicines
No interactions have been observed when Traumon gel is used as directed.

Pregnancy and Lactation

  • Use in the first and second trimesters only if the physician determines the benefit outweighs the risk.

  • Do not exceed the recommended daily dose.

  • Avoid use during the third trimester.

  • Etofenamate passes minimally into breast milk; breastfeeding mothers should avoid prolonged use and not exceed the recommended dose. Do not apply near the breasts.
